comment Why do programmers use or recommend Mac OS X?
@Ed: I actually do C ("serious") development in a Linux environment. And you're completely right. I was just giving some reasons as to why other people prefer using a Mac for development. Windows does support python and perl (unsure about prolog) but it's not as friendly to the command line (just my opinion). I'm must more comfortable working in a bash shell rather than the Command Prompt, and Macs offer the nicer option.

@Renesis: Yes. What do you think full-time iPhone app developers do? Trust me, they didn't get the Mac 'cause it looks pretty. (Some of them might have ;)

comment Converting to a mac-book pro for multi disciplined development
I have a Mac utilizing a dual-boot environment. That being said, most of my development (non-iOS) is done in a *NIX environment (Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora)

comment How to effectively do manual debugging?
@Mason: Agreed. @delnan, jomero: Read Your Damn Code. Line by line, and if you need it, to someone. Going through your code carefully and methodically is the best way to debug. Also, compile often and use version control software. The reason I say print statements is not the way to go is because if you need a debugger, print statements might work but they'll generally just waste your time in a "trial and error" sort of manner. So, again, RYDC

comment What applications for self-adaptive programs can you think of?
Research isn't done by things "coming into" your mind, just by happenstance. This is a good first step for you to gain some ideas but then be sure to follow up by finding, reading, and analyzing research papers in these fields. Also, since this is for a project, try to find similar projects in related areas.

comment What are typical responsibilities and achievements recorded on a CV, for a programming job?
That's why you need to refer to what you've done in the past, i.e. history. Otherwise you're just pulling from thin air. You need both context and content. Not either or.

comment Reasons Programmers Leave
@wildpeaks: Do not take this as the norm. I work at a large corporate company that has an awesome work, play, and ethics culture. Sure, you don't get 2.5 mo of vacation but you don't need it. There's plenty of time to enjoy life and ample opportunities to take time off. And the company has been around for a long time, it's not going anywhere. I also love what I do and don't care what the building looks like. Then again, the company I work for is known to be a great place to work.

Documentation? Bug reporting? Pretty sure you don't have to use it.

comment Modules already committed, client doesn't pay, what should I do?
If you can prove the client hired you (with the intent of monetary compensation) through e-mails, etc, you might have a chance. Otherwise, walk away if possible.

comment How come there is still so much programming work?
Damn! Send me the secret to living off of Ubuntu and Windows. I know for sure they don't support my needs. Broaden your horizons, the world doesn't revolve around your Ubuntu system.

comment What is the biggest weakness of students graduating with degrees in Computer Science?
@Anna, Billy: Yes, I've had my share of catastrophe as well, both with a group and foolishly lacking one. From these experiences I've found working in a group of two, with someone who doesn't need constant reminders and pushing and that you have worked with before is ideal. If only it always worked that way...

comment What is the biggest weakness of students graduating with degrees in Computer Science?
@HLGEM: Computer science isn't website development, and it's not meant to be. Having said that, you never met me and I do happen to know how to set up databases and query them. I'm starting to get the feeling that I just was in a really good program...
