comment Would you make your website's source code public?
@Craig: That's because people want products and services targeted for them. Not random code or services that someone releases for free. You don't need to be a 'name' company to have people look at, or for, your work. You just need a product or idea that someone else values.

comment How do you deal with translating theory into practice?
@Mr. Shickadance: I'd say most, if not all, of what you mentioned is spot-on. I used to work with theoretical (and practical) biologists, and (very theoretical) mathematicians. Getting everyone to be on the same page was a major undertaking, and good, frequent, communication was essential. Very rarely would any of us immediately understand the big picture and how to get theory grounded in reality.

comment Which skills would you expect and appreciate in a Junior Software Engineer?
Since you're a JSWE. Be competent in the languages you said you were competent in. Nothing is more exasperating to hire someone who says they know a language but only learned it in one class. Example: people who list C/C++ on their resume but can't use one or the other (god forbid, can't use either!)

comment Why does there seem to be a lot of fear in choosing the “wrong” language to learn?
@Michael: Nothing wrong with Lisp =). I'm just not a functional-programming-language guy. Plus, so many parentheses!! However, I've seen some VERY elegant solutions implemented in Lisp. Lots of respect for Scheme and Lisp gurus.
