comment Is “Hiring only the Best” a really practical advice for normal desktop application programming?
Maybe if for every one good developer that applies for a programming position, there are 99 wannabes who write VBA macros or such and want to break out of their admin desk jobs typing numbers into Excel.

comment Helping junior programmers get past their shortcomings?
Oh, closed, BRAVO. I read the six guidelines consstructive subjective questions and this fulfills all of them. Frankly the nonconstructive part is busybodies closing a thread that 13 people have already answered, just because they misunderstood the question. It is simply a reality that senior developers will sometimes be disappointed in the abilities of junior developers, this question only seeks to find any patterns in this disappointment so we can better avoid difficulties. Ignoring legitimate complaints and criticism doesn't benefit anyone and it's got nothing to do with arrogance.

Like on a basic level, they don't know what you mean by creating objects, classes and inheretence? Or more advanced stuff like using the design patterns (you've got to admit, the GoF book is quite abstruse, although there are of course other books/guides)

comment Which skills would you expect and appreciate in a Junior Software Engineer?
@Matt: I see, thanks. So what's the best way to do this on your own? Would just using it for your own pet projects be good enough practice?

comment Do job postings exaggerate their requirements?
Why don't the programming team just write the spec themselves and demand that the recruiter publish it unaltered?

Please tell me you're joking. No, seriously, that's not actually what happens is it?

i've got a feeling Lenny meant you use less keywords in your typical statement, for instance 'for i in range(1,11) has 3 keywords (for, in, range). Of course, sometimes more words is better.
