I guess all this 'thinking' accounts for all the slideware I've seen over the years...

comment Amount of man hours to write a social network
I have to agree with @Job. 'Winner takes all' is now faster and bigger than ever before with goog being the largest example in recent years. That said, Friends Reunited could have been bigger than facebook but they fumbled it. Even if you have a better product than facebook, how are you realistically going to market it? Without marketing you may as well not bother. p.s. You mean 'number of hours' not 'amount of hours'

comment Asked to put in extra hours
The extra hours are never covered by the bonus, pro rata or otherwise, plus you're making a rod for your own back - this will become the norm. A few people working a few extra hours aren't suddenly going to put the project back on track, it's obviously badly managed and will continue to be so.

comment Metric by which to hold developers accountable
btw, have either of you ever used this joelonsoftware.com/items/2007/10/26.html it sounds perfect and I'm sure there must be a way of deriving 'quality' from it - even if it is only in the form of 'developers estimation quality'

Metric = something you can stick in a cell in Excel and do something with it :) Last time I looked "woolly definition of some vague bit of functionality delivered / vague idea of how long someone may have spent developing it - time spent messing about on the web - coffee breaks + overtime for free" came back with ERROR.

comment Some advice concerning Oracle and Java
@Stephen: Because I clicked on something at the top of the page which had the word "Questions" and not "General statements" written on it. This should also be moved to 'programmers'.

comment Tabs versus spaces—what is the proper indentation character for everything, in every situation, ever?
Why would they get blamed for anything - each person who opens the file would see the formatting exactly how they wanted it based on their preferences. In the event that they had none, it would resort to using a default.

comment Cross border data obfuscation and how to deal with it?
I didn't use the term 'encryption' as to me this implies that it will be subsequently decrypted, which is not what is required. The encryption must occur as soon as the data leaves the source system. The encryption is of sensitive client data. I'm more interested in knowning 'best practice', 'strategies' etc
