comment One-use variables - has any language ever had them?
@dharmatech: Then, AFAIK, no such construct exists. The purpose of the constructs that I listed is to restrict access to a given value to within the scope a single expression, which is the predominant factor in avoiding accidental misuse of the variable. The fact that the expression can use the variable more than once isn't very interesting.

@MarcB: Your comment doesn't address the following point made by the OP: "...a common idiom exists whereby, in order to increase readability, parts of a complex expression are factored out into variables...".

@Angelo: Your theory is plausible, but I'm not sure why you don't buy into the idea of leaked tests. It happens all the time. People will go to insane lengths to land a good job.

comment If I wanted to build a search engine, how would I start?
A search engine may consume the output of a web crawler, but they otherwise have very little to do with each other. Moreover, a fast, efficient database of the SQL variety is unlikely to help much in this endeavour. Search engines are generally built using inverted file indexing schemes, which don't fit the SQL mold at all.
