comment Why does the assignment operator assign to the left-hand side?
You're right, it's only logical for a left to right writing system as the roman alphabet, which I guess is used by almost every programming language, if not all.

comment Why would a C executable be smaller when compared to C++ executable
Actually streams are not a C++ language feature as many believe, they're just template classes with the bitshifting operators << and >> overloaded.

It's not "the same hello world program", they are two different programs. You should compile the C program with a C++ compiler and see what happens. People tend to assume that for a program to be in C++ it has to use streams and not printf.

comment Where are octals useful?
PS: Someone edited my question from "who uses octal?", which is pretty different from what's now the question. (this was edited out from my original question)

@Arian and C, C++ and many other languages that use the 0 notation

Totally agree. It's presentation and not data.

comment Using C++ but not using the language's specific features, should switch to C?
Also, I would advice that instead of video tutorials, you get Kernigan's and Stroustrup's books, a nice IDE (Visual Studio, Eclipse, Xcode) and learn by coding the examples, trial and error and resorting to stackoverflow.

Thank you very much, but I'm not learning, I already know C and C++, I'm asking which one to use for this specific project.

comment Learning C for C++ programmers
I've tried, it seems the more advanced C programming level they have, the more they like to obfuscate their code in obscure macros almost impossible to track down to actual code. :D

comment Learning C for C++ programmers
Thanks, but I already use pointers, pointers to functions and memory allocation, as I wrote, I know C++ already. And also already read K&R

Thanks for the great answer. I've coded a lot in C++ and wasn't at all aware that direct use of new and delete was discouraged, so I may have to go back to reading a bit of up-to-date C++ books, what do you suggest?

comment Why do languages such as C and C++ not have garbage collection, while Java does?
I agree, I was citing a more current example.

@job: I blame myself 100%. I know octal notation and should have realised. But still, who uses octals anymore?

comment Why does the assignment operator assign to the left-hand side?
I don't know mathematics anywhere near a PhD, what I state is that as there is no sequentiality, there's no order of execution in mathematics both in an assignment or in an equality, unlike programming, in which both sides of an assignment can be different at some point in time, and they end up being equal at some other point in time. But in mathematics, in an assignment like let a be... as there is no time, both sides of the assignment are equal as well, so the assignment is in fact an equality, no wonder why both use the same sign: =

Interesting observation, if the de facto standard language for IT wasn't english, this might have ended up being the other way around.

@FarmBoy: in mathematics, assignment and equality ARE the same thing, as there is no sequence in a formula as there is in computers. ( a equals b and at the same time b equals a )

comment How should I charge for programming things which take two minutes to fix?
I only charge full hours, so if you are not assigned any other work you can do in the rest of the hour, you should charge the full 25$

Your usual list lacks PHP, a really usual language.

comment isn't number localization just unnecessary?
@vartec Actually, foot in football doesn't mean that the ball is played with the foot, but that the sport is played on your feet as opposed to playing on a horse. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football#Etymology

@vartec Right, after all know I know how long a football field is but I still ignore yards and pounds, so I'll just say wow and munch some popcorn
