comment CPU recommendation for learning multiprocessor programming
I'm working on a compiler, so I don't have data-parallel code, only task-parallel (each function could be optimized separately). The optimization and analysis components are full of branches (you search for a lot of patterns).

comment CPU recommendation for learning multiprocessor programming
Sadly what I want to do doesn't work well on GPUs, compilers are very branch-intensive (GCC is usually used to test branching performance).

comment What backs up the claim that C++ can be faster than a JVM or CLR with JIT?
Besides the memory and cache usage differences, one of the most important one is the amount of optimization performed. Compare how many optimizations GCC/LLVM (and probably Visual C++/ICC) do relative to the Java HotSpot compiler: a lot more, especially regarding loops, eliminating redundant branches and register allocation. JIT compilers usually don't have the time for these aggressive optimizations, even thought they could implement them better using the available run-time information.

comment Will taking a job in web development prevent a low-level programming career?
Actually I 'need' one, but if it would be something that I like to do I would also 'want' it.
