Pongtonkerous! I am a developer and I code. Primarily develop in C# and Ruby, some enforced SQL, with a bit of iPhone objective-C thrown in for fun.

comment Should you use C# and F# together
Anonymous types are not really an F# principle. May be you mean to refer to type inference (what the var keyword does in C#) whereby the compiler guesses what type you are referring to. This is used throughout F#.

@HLGEM, not as good... probably.

Stored procedures - the septic tank of computer science.

comment Should I tell someone that their commit caused a regression?
For a long time now I've wanted to buy a large rubber trout. Anyone who breaks the build would have to keep that trout prominently on their desk for the next day. I will probably have to wait until I work at a less professional (and more friendly) place than where I am at the moment for this...

I have been convinced. Bought the book and am very glad I did!

comment Can Powershell do anything that Iron Ruby can't?
I should point out I am a programmer not a system admin, so I think in terms of data manipulation rather than configuration manipulation which might be why I don't fully understand the differences.

True, I understand they are slightly different things. I'm just interested in the practicalities of what can be achieved with the knowledge. Does sharepoint not expose some kind of .Net assembly that can be used? Could you elaborate on why PS would be needed?

comment Why would you use vi/vim
@tdammers : A seasoned Unix user would already know Vi.

comment How frequently do you switch mode?
@Chris, yeah we've just had a baby so I have to take whatever chances to code that I can get! I very rarely find myself in front of a laptop in my spare time any more.

How do you generate a random character sequence? Put a beginner in front of Vim and tell them to exit it.

It takes <15 minutes (depending on download bandwidth) to install and get Git up and running.

comment What should I learn that I missed by not going to school?
One thing you've missed is having to study stuff that you have absolutely no interest in. Most college courses will have some aspects that are intensely boring, when self learning you would just skip over this. Having to persevere with these does build up a certain mental strength and agility.

I think Lisp disproves this.
