Pragmatic Programming covers this as well. calling throwaway prototypes prototypes and evolutionary ones 'tracer bullet software': stuff designed to be small and test out ideas, if it works than follow through with the existing code, if not then you can throw it away without much cost

I will add that while this works, you want to minimize the damage this can cause the client relation. As soon as you get an unreasonable deadline, you need to be upfront and let the salesperson know that it just isn't going to happen, so they can deal with the client accordingly.
