comment How should I behave as a developer in a project that's headed for failure?
Being seen to rescue a failed project can have its down side. It makes you more likely to get assigned to the next failing project.

comment How can I deal with a team member who dislikes making comments in code?
Code reviews & pair programming are the best way in my experience of improving the overall standard of developers in a team. It is about sharing knoledge and skills within the team. Without it you are makeing developers learn the hard way and assuming they came out of college perfect. The general lack of this practice around the industry is probably the reason why there are so many developers with 10+ years of experience that can't write readable, well organised code.

This approach is more likly to make the programmer quit rather than training them in the proper way of doing things.

If the people doing the code review are laughing rather than being constructive they need training every bit as much as a developer that can't write readable code. Giving criticism that is constructive rather than derogative is one of the social skills I find developers often lack.

comment How do you balance between “do it right” and “do it ASAP” in your daily work?
Do you have any good "metrics/articles/research" that we could all use?

comment What should be in a coding standard?
Where I am currently working all interfaces have to be implemented explicitly and it is a big pain. If only they had read the Framework Design Guidelines before writing their coding standard.

comment Communications regarding maintainability of code
@kevin: Getting people to get second oppinions is often a bad idea as they normally end up getting someone who says 'Yes I could do that in 5 minutes' because they don't know what is involved, know they will never be held to account and frankly don't care.

comment I can get visual studio for free through school, should I?
The best way to learn C++ is to use MS-DOS Edit to edit your code. In fact what's wrong with punch cards. These new fangled IDEs are over-rated! (Only kidding!)

Almost all the projects (80%+) I have been involved with have been methodically tested, but then I have almost exclusivly done corporate mission critical applications.
