asked | Is there an IDE for python that creates the same kind of reflective environment that Smalltalk provides? |

Python productivity VS Java Productivity If your productivity is significantly increased by your IDE, then the chances are that there is something terribly wrong with you, or your programming platform. (Smalltalk is the exception this, because it creates a wholly reflective system for programming). |

Get a Programming Internship if you don't know programming? Learning instead? Maybe, but you're better off learning another real-world language first. I would suggest python (because it's actually pretty good), or C# (because there are lots of jobs). Even a basic level understanding of another language will help. |

Books about learning programming with C++ as a first language Unless you have a practical reason for wanting to learn C++ first, you are much better off choosing something else. C++ is big, and there is a lot of very, very bad advice out there on how to use it. |

How good are (or have to be) programmers after study / education? I agree, but I think that any aspiring programmer is more likely to pass the various puzzles posed in interviews if they also read and play around with a little computer science as well. |

What language/framework/workflow sets do you recomend for a small office? I think we need to know what you like and don't like about what you're doing now. If you're willing to learn a new language + framework, there are lots and lots of options that are basically all reasonable. |

How do quick & dirty programmers know they got it right? I was going to write this - if you have unit tests, Q&D code can be alright, as long as it doesn't overwhelm the codebase, and the tests are sufficient. |

What would you do if your client required you not to use object-oriented programming? I would add that any functional programming language with support for polymorphism should make it fairly easy to write an object oriented or pseudo-object oriented style that allows you to easily add new types of ant. |

Do object-oriented programming languages exist that are not class-based? @Nikko: That is what happens behind the scenes in every object-oriented language, and fairly explicitly in Python and CLOS (common lisp). |

Has any language become greatly popular for something other than its intended purpose? Although, was Java ever actually released for embedded work (before embedded java, which came rather after its promotion for the web)? |
