@ThomasOwens: Whilst I agree with your comment in principle, in practice I find that the multiplication approach works remarkably well for me. While I appreciate that this points to a deficit in my estimation technique, at least I'm systematically bad, and I have found an effective technique for compensating for my internal bias.
