comment At what age could I reasonably teach my children about programming?
IMO it's important to let your child have a childhood. There'll be plenty of time to learn these things when they're older and unfortunately have responsibilities.

comment Is using nested try-catch blocks an anti-pattern?
Yes this is sort of what I was trying to get at. Of course there comes a point in your nested try/catch statements where you just have to say enough is enough. I was making a case for nesting as opposed to sequential try/catch's, saying that there are situations where you only want the code inside the second try to execute if the first try falls over.

if you do the try catch one after another then surely the code inside the second try will be executed even if the first catch clause is not invoked?

comment From Delphi to C# for Dummies
I presume when he says Garbage collector he is talking about memory management in .NET as opposed to actually invoking the garbage collector when you want it to do something. The importance of this would depend on what sort of development they do I guess.

comment Can a small team enter .NET world while most of them are working on OpenSource languages?
I pretty much disagree with everything you have said here. 1. There is a tonne of managed C# librarys out there. 2. you can use unmanaged code in C# projects. 3. You can provide for linux with C# - it's called mono. Not only those points, but I think when you say that java gives the benefits of C++/Qt and C# doesn't you know your post is slightly ridiculous. :) Without being harsh, your post reads like a pretty typical anti-Microsoft rant based on conjecture and not substance.

comment How fast should a version number increment?
From a customer point of view keep it simple. This is why you see iOS4, iOS5, Firefox4, Windows 7 etc and not iOS 5.2.3.667 etc. You should of course have proper build numbers for your project but when marketing it to customers just keep it simple.

What do you mean by "selected a great provider". Do you mean you outsourced the project to another company?

This question will probably get closed, but you're young so I'll just say that my advice is to learn, learn, and learn some more. This industry is great, you are able to teach yourself a stack of information!

comment Should the admin interface of a public-facing webapp be accessible externally?
Do you log customer data? Or just information about a particular order (i.e. items bought and their prices).

+1 for mentioning PCI compliance, though this of course depends on the type of data that he is viewing / storing in this backend.
