Just a handle I use. Got the nickname in Spain since I'm blond. ;)

Good link, thanks. I remember reading an excellent magazine article exploring different ways to name unit tests but can't for the death of me find it now. May have been Visual Studio Magazine or Code Magazine.

Generating a report of the 3500 unit/integration tests that passed would probably be of little help to tester, even if the tests were well named (which they should be but aren't). In order to provide testers with meaningful information about unit test, the dev would have to dig through the unit test associated with a particular feature and somehow communicate to the tester what is actually tested and how it's asserted. That's a lot of work.

Good points. She does seem like a reasonable person. My fear, which I didn't make very clear, is that the unit tests lead the testers in the wrong direction and false security in what they need and need not test.

@Jarrod Good question. Kinda both I guess. I work in an environment with a strictly formal process, which inevitably produces bureaucracy. I don't mind bureaucracy as long as I can see some benefit. Here I can't

@Yannis I never said I already have the reports. It would be quite a bit of work to produce unit/integration test reports that would be meaningful to a tester.

SOX no, CMMI yes. Our unit/integration tests are part of the code review process and that does stand up to audit. I can get a generated report from a unit/integration test run, but that's pretty cryptic for a tester. Coverage is also in the report but that in itself means nothing.

But shouldn't the focus come from the specs? There are situations when code changes have unexpected repercussions and then it's very important for the dev to communicate that testing should also cover this and this.

Redundant testing is what's often used as an argument and may sometimes be true. However, system testing is always performed on the entire system whereas unit/integration testing focuses on a specific unit. I see a danger here.

The downside to me is extra work that provides no or little value.

@Yannis If you have never been asked to do work that you deem useless, then it doesn't matter. To you, that is.

@Ludwig I haven't been able to get a clear answer as to what can be gained from unit test reports. I have a feeling it's more of a turf war, since it contains the "testing".

Thanks for the update. Are you familiar with TeamReview? I like the way it integrates with VS.

Thanks. This is worth a try. I realize that using a tool would make sense here, and it's not that we don't want to use them. I work in a large public sector agency and introducing new tools is an extremely slow and cumbersome process. I'll take a look at Review Board.

Granted. However, not all devs are in the same place geographically. More importantly, the senior devs and architects doing the review are extremely busy (mostly due to numerous meetings), so they will have to do the review at their convenience. Should an important issue arise, we can of course have a one-on-one session. Good point though.

There seems to be quite a few threads on code review on StackOverflow, so I'm not sure why this would be wrong. But I'll try StackExchange.

I remember reading Peopleware years ago. Have to track it down again. @btilly Exactly! Basic rule of statistics, correlation is evidence that, on its own, doesn't prove anything.

Open plan office undoubtedly promotes communication. Is that good or bad? When a dev is "in the zone", it may take 15 or even 30 minutes to get back into the "zone". Ten distruptions per day means a lot of lost time, not to mention the frustration that inevitably follows.
