I was going to -1 this answer because it just refutes the premises but since I so wholeheartedly agree with you, I'd rather just -2 everyone who checks in generated code.

@sleske we were putting the XSD's in the same packages as POJO's that used them. One guy was even using the protected members of the generated code directly (that guy is going to be sad soon).

@randomA they're all homemade (except one or two we got from the government) and very frequently changed right now as we're in the process of converting from a straight up client-database program to something that uses axis-2 in between. XSD's are really nice because of marshalling between delphi and java

@randomA but you still don't touch the generated code right?

My problem is that we update the schemas all the time, you think that would change the way you do things?

yeah, I like that new feature although is seems like it's just candy to appease Java programmers, next thing you know they'll be letting us define our variables inside the procedures.

@Mike sorry, I forgot to edit the question when I put the bounty on it. We got past the whole on-the-fence about buying it because the boss wants to use it in house for our own accounting (and dogfooding) purposes. Now, we just want to connect to it from something outside the CLR.

comment Is there a design pattern for updating lists?
This code will be in Java, the problem is the list is modified in Delphi and marshalled/bound into XML and unmarshalled in Java. I can load up the original list in java as well as the original rights list in java. Oh well, this is seems like a good solution to me. The description of the decorator pattern really seems like it fits the bill.

Thanks, that might be the best way of doing it - coworker suggested the same thing to me. I'll have to add HowModified to like 9000 objects, but oh well.

@RobertHarvey preserving the relative order of the merged lists is important. People are going to see things in a listbox in my program, save their screen and see all the things they changed at the bottom

comment How to write camel case for words like “phonenumber”, “motorcycle”, “wavelength”, etc
@909Niklas I'd drop "name" entirely as much as possible. Just use "street" If it's a string, it's a name unless that's detrimental or confusing. username is what it is, it's a call sign, not the "user's name", so it's more like motorcycle than firstName or lastName (which should be camelcased)

Closed as opinion based because Code Complete is primarily opinion based. Aren't there any Bell Labs studies from the 70's someone can cite to prove that people are going to write 40% more bugs if you camelcase userName?

@svidgen do you remember what your place had to do to get it's hands on a test copy of GP, do you absolutely have to buy it just to code to it? It's just painful since it costs as much as many shiny new Delphis.

meta note dynamics is the stackoverflow tag for microsoft dynamics, I wanted to use it here, but it wouldn't let me, I didn't think it was a big enough deal to bring up on meta.

comment Is there a standard for encoding recurring patterns of dates?
Thanks for this, if you added some examples, I'd find this to be a very complete answer, not sure why the questions was closed it's got a fairly straightforward answer (although the cron idea probably would work too, this is more helpful because of exchange interoperability), I just couldn't think of the wording for the question when I was looking it up on Google so the word "abbreviated" got in there.

@MichaelT there's nothing in there for "every other day" or "odd numbered days" or "the third friday in march"

@RobertHarvey I mean standards for storing that information outside of serialized objects. I'll edit the question.

comment Why did Embarcadero make me sign a waiver?
@ThomasOwens OK, but is it talking about a Brazilian contracted to create software for Iran or someone reselling Delphi to Iran? I wonder if developers in other languages using purchased IDE's have to undergo the same scrutiny

@MichaelT yeah, I know about wassanal or whatever, but this doesn't even mention that encryption and all the encryption libraries in Delphi are 3rd party/open source jobbers unaffiliated with Embarcadero directly.

I think you understood the question and thanks for the Yes, but do you know if it's ever been done successfully?
