comment Why is 0 false?
@NeilG because it's convenient to associate set with a number that equals to the number of elements contained in the set. Makes remembering rules much easier :-)

comment Why is 0 false?
@Neil G. No, not because of convention. How many elements are in empty set?

comment Why is 0 false?
@Neil G When OR is associated with addition, 0 corresponds to empty set. Choosing otherwise just does not seem natural.

comment Why are effect-less functions executed?
@yi_H You are also likely to have many other bugs in your program, with varying difficulty of detecting. Relying on infinite loops to expose your bugs is a bit unrealistic

comment Why are effect-less functions executed?
@James Why would anyone want this to execute? As the question said, the only reason that makes sense is to have code that takes time, and there are better ways to do that.

comment What is the limit to the number of a class methods?
This limitation is for short-term memory only. Otherwise, how could we possibly remember all those different letters and words? Seriously, if the class is going to be used heavily, you can think of it as mini-language, and have as many methods as you need to express whatever you have to do with it.

comment Why do most of us use 'i' as a loop counter variable?
+1 for "In Fortran" because that's how that tradition has started - it does not matter whether you like Fortran or not.

comment Is it legal for me to contribute to open source software while employed?
Google is an exception. If you talk to your employer, they most likely think "aha, this guy sure has too much time on his hands to spend it on side projects, he must be slacking on his day job" In other words, talk at your risk :-)

comment What is a hack?
@Display Name - wrong, with your order Jill will come above Jim. Also, last time I checked, they are still teaching "ABC" in the kindergarten - did your change really went through?

And the real solution for making Jim to appear first in alphabetical list is, of course, to reorder the alphabet.

comment Why was Scala not implemented with C or C++
Also, libraries. It's really difficult to use libraries written for explicit memory management in a language with garbage collection. One indication is peculiar insistence of java people to have everything in 'pure java'.

comment Why was Scala not implemented with C or C++
I meant 'real' garbage collection. I don't think that garbage collection that provokes questions like this one is good enough. Heck even JVM is not good enough - otherwise people like AzulSystems would not be able to make a living by helping other people to overcome JVM deficiencies.
