I think SMTP isn't a good example, because the server has intermittent state, which is much more core to common uses of REST than the hypermedia point. The whole point is that there's many resources, with few verbs. SMTP, by your description, has many verbs on a single resource.

@michael_n hey, that looks like a nice middle ground. Thanks for the idea!

Thanks for your answer. I see that this is the Git way of working. @Pete, Word itself can do a pretty decent Diff, not sure about merge. But still, it's a pain that's easier avoided with locks. We seldomly edit Office documents simultaneously; most of our work (including detailed docs) are in the code. This question is about the 2% of cases where 2 people do edit the same document at the same time. Given that it's 2%, not 30%, a merge solution feels suboptimal.

@Demizey So you're suggesting we move our entire firm's document templates and stationery and all currently relevant documents for all projects for all our customers to LaTeX before we switch to git? Wow, Subversion looks a whole lot more attractive again.

@Spoike, sounds like a valid answer to me :-) Anyway, any recommendations?

@Baqueta By email or on paper. The point is that "Only use text for docs!" isn't a reasonable approach here, since the effort involved into making it look half-decent is much higher than in tools like MS Word.
