comment Are optional parameters helpful or a hindrance to application maintenance?
dsimcha's not missing the point, he's just making an orthogonal point, and it's a good one. It's pointless to debate this in the abstract, because it depends entirely on the details. Too many optional parameters is definitely a code smell, but sometimes there's good reason for that, and the mitigation is the use of named parameters or options hash.

comment Should developers accept overtime/weekend work/denied bonus payments?
Yes you can do both, that's not the point. The fundamental nature of software engineering is producing an operable piece of code. You might be a support and installation engineer, you might be selling SaaS, you might be consulting, you might be expected to wear a bluetooth headset to field angry customer calls, but those are not the essence of software development. Picasso may have fielded a few requests for loading giant canvasses into trucks, but that doesn't make Art a service industry.

What do you mean software development is a service industry? In traditional terms it's a craft.

comment Why do ads for s/w engineers always say they “offer a fast-paced environment”?
That's not true about ninjas. They might implant themselves in an organization, quietly doing some menial labor for years, just to get close enough to perform an assassination.
