What is the best way to discern an excellent programmer in a job interview? I would suggest puzzles which don not have a way to be solved or that have too many. The only thing I typically observe is how the candidate approaches solving the problem, whether he asks clarifying questions, whether he makes reasonable hypotheses etc. I strongly agree that for many people the context of an Interview is not the best place to solve brain-intensive stuff and shouldn't be taken as hard evidence for future performance estimates. |
