comment I'm making a report generator, how should I run it?
Probably not. And I can't really explain why I don't feel comfortable with shelling out. Something about loosing control I guess. Maybe I need to read up more on the whole process of process-control and errormessages and such.

comment Report generator windows service polling database for work
The report orders come into the database on demand. Our web-interface exposes a report builder. Our customers use this to create their specific reports. I have been thinking about going the queue-route (RabbitMQ or such) but I am not able to do any major rewrites on the web application at this time. (I am doing a complete rewrite in the future though)

Yes, I'm sorry. It's kind of difficult to explain in a good way. But no "shelf-solution" is going to work. I guess my question is really how to lay out the architecture of the application.

The data is in MS SQL, and it's probably going to stay there for a while. I'm only rewriting the report generator right now.

comment Development platform for .NET development?
This is what I went with in the end. Only with 16GB ram. Got a 256GB system drive and Windows 8. The system boots in about 8 seconds from cold. :)

So it's now almost two years later, I have quit, come back, and got nearly what I wanted this time ;) Including two used HP LP2465 IPS 1200p LCD's for $500 :)

I guess I really don't know in which end to start. I'm trying to learn TDD, and one of my pet projects is a very data driven app. Kind of a multiuser image blog thingy...
