comment Do GUI programmers have an undue advantage over others?
As one developer put it, GUI programmers write device drivers for people. The challenge is, there isn't an exact I/O ports specification for people and the variability of responses may be vastly different among the differing units – people are more fickle unlike USB mass storage devices. Thus back to the original analogy, it's a lot more difficult to write drivers to interface with moist robots.

comment Who uses GnuSTEP?
From GnuSTEP's list of developers/users, I couldn't find any application that individuals can buy at an affordable price (say, < $1000 per license). Also it sounds like that list of clientele is mostly "legacy" users of the NextSTEP days (having legacy code when NextSTEP was popular in corporates).
