Minecraft might have sold a lot, but it was in spite of its performance problems and would've sold a lot more if it didn't require such beefy machines. Of course algo/data strutures are critical but Java was a poor choice for a game engine. I for one would play more often if I got more than 15 fps on a machine that has no problem playing left 4 dead.

I never really measured it but I had a feeling the big O's were different. I originally wrote the C++ version in a functional style and it had speed problems also until I taught it to modify the data structures instead of creating new, changed ones. But that also made the code harder to read...
