If you compile with gcc -O -c -g -Wa,-ahl=so.s so.c you can see the assembly output for each line of C code. This makes it a little easier to understand what is going on.

GNU C (but neither GNU C++ nor GNU Objective C) allows nested functions. Your example code would actually compile and work as expected with GCC. But I would recommend against using this extension.
