Good point on this being a generic build vs buy decision. Basically I'd have to be the one building it and I didn't want to waste client's time/money re-inventing the wheel if there was one that was good enough already. I've done a bit of ASP.NET development, but haven't had much experience customizing ecommerce solutions. I definitely don't know all the things an ecommerce system needs, it'd be an iterative process of delivering smaller features to the client quickly and allow them to determine direction.

I'm more familiar with ASP.NET than other frameworks, but a lot of the stuff like user management and authorization is built in. There are third party packages available for order processing and shopping cards and whatnot. The requirements for this site don't involve things like gift cards, etc (which makes it easier). The site I want to make is very similar to fancydressoutfitters.co.uk, just different kind of stuff for sale (which is why I referenced the blog about building it). How customizable would you say various eCommerce frameworks are?
