comment What are the different aspects to consider when porting code from a single threaded environment to a multi threaded environment or vice versa?
See my comment to kevin cline's answer - I know I can do all this on a single thread, and it won't be a problem. I'm just considering the ease of portability for users. (I should have added that users will have the source code as well, but I don't want them to NEED to change the library code).

I realise it's not necessary to have multi-threading in the reference app. What I'm trying to consider is whether it's easier, for someone who wants to port the library with or without the reference app) into their own system, is it easier if what I have provided is single-threaded or not?

@DanPichelman Probably yes, due to budget / time constraints.

I will either make sure the library is thread-safe, or if that is not possible (not clear yet) I will make sure the reference app includes protection around any non-thread-safe library functions. I don't think it's really the library that's the problem - it's more those users who might wish to start with the reference app, port it to their own platform and then adapt it for their own purposes.

(I've tried quite hard to keep this factually answerable rather than a subjective "which way is better" approach. But if you feel it's too subjective we can discuss how best to edit it!)

comment Agile in a multidisciplinary environment
The Agile Manifesto tells you to value working software over comprehensive documentation. Firstly, that doesn't mean not having an architecture that has been properly thought through; and secondly, it does not mean that the documentation has no value at all - just that is has less value than the software itself.

Agile is NOT an excuse for not having a plan, or not having an architecture. If you find yourself having to bullshit your way through a design conversation it should be a huge red flag to you that something has gone wrong.

comment What is a faster alternative to a CRC?
Another vote for pyCrc here. using it in various projects with different constraints and it is just great.

comment What's the worst question you were ever asked at interview?
@Dori - completely agree, I have been asked that too. In the same interview I was asked whether I had a boyfriend (yes) and then whether I would run off and get married and have babies and waste all the effort they'd put into training me. They did then offer me the job but I didn't take it.

I don't have a problem with the concept of regexes, but the specific syntaxes (different depending on whether you're coding them in perl / python / bash etc) means I have to look something up every single time.
