comment Do common relational database systems work 'out of the box'?
SQLite is what you want. No users and permissions, no server (file system based) just the basic SQL.

comment Do I need to use cloud services (EC2 / GAE) for my web app?
You can run Play apps at Heroku, but last I checked they supported Postgres but not MySQL. Heroku is generally an option for web apps that use a framework (Play, Rails, Django, Flask, etc.)

comment Explain MVC to non-programmers
It is often helpful to mention cases where bug-fixes and feature requests would have been faster (cheaper) if the code-base had the appropriate separation of concerns.

comment Is there any evidence that one of the current alternate JVM languages might catch on?
Would like to delete this question. It just isn't valuable, and I expect if it were asked again, it would be closed immediately.

comment Is there a viable alternative to the agile development methodology?
I meant that I hadn't encountered them in the real world. All sorts of things are out there on the interwebs, but I'm not going to start hunting them down now just because I happened to ask a question back in 2010.

comment Is there a viable alternative to the agile development methodology?
I wasn't disingenuous. After five years of development in a variety of companies, I've only encountered two, and one is only named as a perjorative. Spiral? Never heard of it.

comment How to explain a layperson why a developer should not be interrupted while neck-deep in coding?
@Spoike Not if IM is also being used for work, as is common.
