comment When should I make the first commit to source control?
When you power your machine off at night, think... if my hard disk fails tomorrow when I power my machine on how much work am I going to lose - and can I remember everything that I did since the last commit" - then think - should I just commit before going home?

comment How big does my project need to be for me to unit test it?
Agree with this - when working in a single developer shop you need to strike a balance between software quality and testing everything (which can take up a lot of your time). Don't forget that everytime you make a change you may need to modify your unit tests to suit

comment My boss decided to add a “person to blame” field to every bug report. How can I convince him that it's a bad idea?
The boss is probably on performance related pay and one key performance indicator is the number of bugs reported. Hopefully he/she will share out his bonus to the development team at the end of the year.

comment Should I tell a departed coworker about their “sev 1” defect?
Think about how you would feel if someone contacted you about your second year computer science college project to say it had a memory leak. Most likely they will feel the same.

comment What does Windows 8 mean for the future of .NET?
- and we still have people running VB6 apps on Windows 7 (and we plan to run them on Windows 8 as well!)

comment INI files or Registry or personal files?
@NeilWhite - agreed they should have permissions but an over zealous IT administrator can change this (or give read/write but not create permissions). Also the OP did not mention that these settings were necessarily per user, they may be per machine.

Playing devils advocate though the AllowPromotionalMaterial column in the db could be switched at some point in the future to a different column name and the original used for some other data
