@berlin: I'd imagine that if you got a job at NASA or the NSA as a software engineer, you'd be faced with all kinds of comp sci research type algorithms. "Software Engineering" is a pretty vague term and can mean a wide variety of things depending on the context of the employer's field.

comment How detailed is the estimate you show your customers?
@david: IMHO, it's better to give too much information than too little. If some clients need explanation as to what specific line items are, then you can provide them with one. Giving them insight into what they're getting and having them feeling confused about specifics is better than having them feel like you might be hiding something from them (even if they don't actually ask you about it).
