Why isn't Java used for modern web application development? +1 for framework overkill. Its getting insane, spring j2ee maven ant hibernate, you spend all your time writing xml config. |

Can you recognise if you are a bad programmer? You mean technically bad or good a producing good enough apps? I've seen a lot of technicall great apps that continually disappointed clients and programmers writing inefficient, hard to maintain, buggy apps that were very useful to users. So what is a bad programmer? |

How do I determine what project ideas will work as a resumé builder? I'd think carefully about why you're making the change. I'd imagine you'd need a good pay cut go to Rails. You might want to do smaller projects with smaller teams but long term I think C++/Java route will povide a better paid and more secure career. |

Is a programmer's gut instinct an acceptable answer with regard to design decisions? Never say never. If the approach works its good enough. In some cases it is good to have measurements, metrics, or accepted knowledge but that would be a waste of time for most problems. |

What does the Spring framework do? Should I use it? Why or why not? I think you really need to try it out for a while for yourself to see if you like it and if its suitable for your project. Personally I hate it. |

Is there any benefit to obsession with making code “look pretty”? Ctrl-E, D is the same as Dev Studio Edit->Advanced->Format Document. Rarely seen function around here. There are lots of other apps around to format code too. |
