comment What are some fun (and very easy) C++ programs for a 10 year old kid to write?
The only reason a ten year old wouldn't be able to do this is because he learned somewhere that ten year olds aren't smart yet. This kid has already learned one of the most complex and nuanced spoken languages in the world by example. I think he can pick up C++.

comment 8yr+ .Net developer interested in game programming - should I learn C++?
I disagree on the performance point. For the vast majority of tasks (even in games) the performance penalty of C# is negligible. That said, I would probably still pick C++ simply because it would let me leverage the Ogre 3D library, which is about eight zillion different flavors of awesome: ogre3d.org

comment How to get a job with no experience?
And I maintain that you get better value per hour by working for free on an open source project than you can get by spending the same time working for free at a company. That's all I have to say.

@psynnott I started in high school with zero experience or classes at $8/hour, in a state with a less than stellar software development market. I see no reason why a college graduate should work for free, ever.

Because you can show someone else your FOSS code. If you work for free on a closed source project, you come out with nothing. Also, many companies ask specifically about work done on open source projects. If you're going to spend time not getting paid to write code, it may as well be for something your future employer cares about.

Ew, unpaid work. I've never done that. Nobody ever should. Contribute to an open source project if you want something to point to. Working for free devalues your skills.

comment Why have a method that returns a bool/int and has the actual object as an output parameter?
That's not what I said. If you read the code that OP posted, there is explicitly an exception case happening, but the method catches it and returns false instead. This question is related to error handling, not expected conditions.

comment How do I set up a source code control system for myself?
+1 BitBucket. Awesome site. Also, Mercurial handles Windows better than Git does, and given that OP says he works with .net (Windows Phone) I assume that's an important factor.
