A lot of documentation in the "VB Universe", (so, not specifically VBA) seems to refer to this as the "Passing Mechanism".

Sorry, minor nit to pick here - "writing to standard output will not fail. If it does fail, how would you tell the user, anyway?" - by writing to standard error? There's no guarantee that a failure to write to one implies that it's impossible to write to the other.

@hamstergene - but in the case of this question, is N the size of the sorted list, or the number of items that have been processed thus far? If you process 10000 items, and keep the top 100 items in a list, or you process 1000000000 items, and keep the top 100 items in a sorted list, the insertion costs in that list remain the same.
