comment Forbidding or controlling “Hidden IT…” Who should write and maintain ad-hoc software applications?
"In my experience, those cases are extremely frequent." -- So your company does an amazing job of hiring great programmers in non programmer jobs and then poor programmers in programming jobs? I think it's more likely that someone that doesn't understand the practices and underlying systems is going to THINK they are writing better software. Just my 2 cents.

comment Are there guidelines on how many parameters a function should accept?
A lot of people here saying that this isn't really the way to go with a on of parms. However what about object constructors. Taken an ORM with a class and its INIT method. I have had cases where i would need 10 or more params that have to be set to something that can't default well. I hate looking at the init function because its hard to work with and hard to remember. Is a constructor an OK edge case or is there a better way to do it?

comment How to separate sensitive data in database(MySql)
You could encrypt it on the application side but the application would have the key. Is this a web application that is "inputing" the data?

@MotiveKyle What domain are you interested in? Web programming? What kind of frameworks are you wanting to evaluate?

comment Determining if language/framework/technology is 'Future-proof'
@MotiveKyle I think the underlying issue (and I suffer from this) is "Is what I have chosen to learn worth the time/effort I am about to put into it?". With so many options it can be overwhelming to figure out how best to invest time/energy for the biggest payoff in our chosen line of work.

comment How to do best practice development as the single IT guy in a small company
@ZweiBlumen You say that you don't have time to do X but as the only IT Guy are you not the one setting your schedule at least in terms of of estimates? You need to be more realistic about how long something is going to take and let them know up front. Don't undercut your time. Also if you are trying to expand your knowledge on something its not always the companies responsibility. You can "bone up" an TDD on some play projects on your own time and then easily integrate them into your day to day.

comment As a programmer, what would you use a personal Wiki for?
I use evernote, while not a wiki, it does everything i need with mobile access. Although I hate having all my "stuff" tied to something like evernote. Anyone know of any open source alternatives? Something i could host on my own servers?

comment Is programming or computer science in general, all about algorithms?
"your algorithms" -- I am self taught. Is there a source or list somewhere that states what these common algorithms are that every programmer should know? I would like to read through them. Thanks!

comment Is it a must for every programmer to learn regular expressions?
Why wouldn't you want to learn them. Once you get "how" they work just get a cheat sheet or quick ref guide. The are immensely useful! Does a programer need to know how to type to program, no, but why would you not want to. Regexp can be learned over a couple days, at least to point of being able to use them modestly and to get to understand why they are so awesome.
