comment Knowing the range of variable types needed
@JMD The 32 bit integer is so common that Java I believe makes this a standard size for all int and smaller types. Even declaring a byte variable, the JVM will still allocate 32 bits of the heap while only utilizing the first 8 bits. The reason for this is performance I would imagine.

@gnat I feel this is deserving a meta discussion. I will be posting a meta question shortly to get community feedback on how we should approach this going forward.

@gnat It is a stretch to ask why one would explicitly declare the private keyword in their code is a question about coding style. This question is far more specific than that. I feel that while a canonical answer might cover a different question, a more specific question can sometimes deserve its own answer.

@gnat I am not sure this is a duplicate of that question. Are you sure you posted the right link?

@RobertGrant Well as free as the memory consumed by keeping a pointer to a memory address. </pedantic>

comment Desktop to Web - How to deal with user-interactive workflows
@OlivierH Rewriting complex software is well... a complex undertaking. If you detail out the high level tasks and provide high level estimates you might be able to use that as leverage to convince your boss to hire more people.

This question appears to be off-topic because it is not about software development per the scope laid out in the Help Center.

comment Can a version of Python's shelve module that knows when its entries have been modified be written in any programming language?
I have a feeling that this question can have an answer more than a list. I unfortunately don't understand python well enough to find a way to improve this. If somebody can find a good way to edit this question then please do.
