Yes - brilliant, I missed the super call. So the flow would be b.loop... if(counter==1)... super.loop->a.loop... Sysoutprint... counter++... this.loop->b.loop...

@delnan - can you explain in an answer? I didn't think open recursion required a traditional recursive call to the same methods - just to other methods via this or self and that may not be defined on the same class, but potentially on a sub class.

I don't think I understand you example. In your example, new A().loop() will continually call the loop method on A. new b().loop() will call the loop method once on B. There is no point in here where the call would be dispatched to a super or sub class?

comment Does a time estimate equal a promise in Scrum?
@RyanCromwell - that is the difference between an estimate and a commitment. If you estimate things, there should be an understanding that they make more time, or less time. If you commit to completing a piece of work then you should understand that it is your professional reputation at stake.

comment What is the best design decision approach?
The reason you are getting vague answers is because you have obfuscated what Foo1 and Foo2 are in your question. i.e. it is not clear whether they are specialisations of the same thing. Can you tell us more about them?

comment Design For Asynchronous User Interface
@Oded - the UI is inside a third party application and calls a web service via JavaScript that I have written, which returns a JSON message that represents the UI state (i.e. what is enabled / disabled, visible / hidden, and localised messages).

@Ian - I can't disable the button because it may be re-enabled by the polling mechanism, which contains the UI state (i.e. it would cause a race condition by allowing the UI to maintain a part of the state, which would be overwritten by the polling if a response was received just after the button click).
