comment Is there any algorithm to calculate highest possible return on stock market?
Only retrospectively.

comment Protobuf design patterns
JSON serialization using jackson2 is pretty fast too. The thing I hate about GBP is the unnecessary duplication of the main interface classes.

comment Should Properties have side effects
@rwong Relevant yes but completely non sense --nonetheless must be read (so as to be aware of the issues he highlights). At least on this matter I am in the Skeet camp.

comment Reusing code across several clients' projects
+1 to @AndyzSmith. Yes it depends on the contract, only on the contract, and nothing but the contract. Don't encourage practical thinking here --you should be obliged by your contact.

comment Algorithm for compression of a dictionary (words and definitions)
By replacing one word with many words you cannot achieve compression but you instead will achieve expansion.

comment Finding an object on an infinite line
If I reword this in English --I have to search for an object in an unordered doubly linked list where my current pointer is in the middle of the list and the size of the list is infinite. Correct?

comment Is a NoSQL database suitable for me?
+1 Although one example does by no means settle it but only last year did I write my customised full text search engine by exploiting the text structure than go for a Mongo solution. It outperformed on memory benchmarking and matched on time to query but the biggest wins were in the flexibility of the queries that I could run without changing schema. Point of this story is --examining your data can bring about better wins sometimes.

comment What is the name of this particular kind of over-engineering?
+1 Yes. The all powerful manager!

comment Must a programmer learn text editors like Emacs and Vim? How important are they?
+1 Do not learn in production environments. I have seen outages because of ineptness with a text editor.

comment industry averages for time spent on maintenance
Bug fixing != maintenance! Bug fixing means you coded faults in the system and they need to be fixed in order to restore correct functionality. By maintenance I would mean all tasks such as bug fixes, scalability improvements, hardware migration, and performance improvements etc. I would say more than 25-30% of the time being spent just on bug fixes needs a governance call immediately. Up to 40-50% of the effort spent on maintenance overall sounds reasonable for a mid-size enterprise system.

comment Finding the possible combinations of x switches out of y being true
You probably would need an efficient algorithm to generate the combinations if the gap size can be large.

comment What do small business people do with regards to 'legal' when selling software
I have deliberately not written much about litigation protection but I can if the OP shows an interest --otherwise I will just be blabbering off topic.

comment Design patterns: Extract instance types into different buckets
@John I entertained that possibility. But then how will canConsume() identify if it can consume a given type? Will it maintain a map of supported classes or use instanceof? I.e., the same problem again.

@JonathanHenson Oh yes! That is so annoying.

comment Design patterns: Extract instance types into different buckets
@ReinHenrichs Thanks. I gave them some meaningful names but the essence of the problem is that I want to filter a collection of objects based on what run time type they have.

You are integrating it with a 3rd party app. Understood. But why does that rule out triggers?

comment C# Classes instance members vs. enum
@TimothyP Correct --but that involves casting etc. which defeats the purpose of OOO. Note that I can achieve GetHue() without extension methods too --e.g., by writing helper classes. But then my helper class/extension method becomes hardwired to the enum.
