comment Is SQL important if I know ORM frameworks well?
A declarative programming language, is still a programming language. SQL is a special purpose programming language, and yes it is declarative for the biggest part. As for the meat of your comment, I don't get it. SQL while not a general purpose programming language, is still a language. You still need to know the syntax, its limitations and flaws.

comment How to achieve a loosely coupled REST API but with a defined and well understood contract?
There is no standard for this. I guess it's a too immature/controversial field for a standard :-). Check out this similar discussion.

comment How to achieve a loosely coupled REST API but with a defined and well understood contract?
@BestPractices: Let me reverse the question. How does the consumer know the API endpoint on which he should issue the GET request? The answer is that it knows it. It should know it, otherwise it cannot contact the producer. Similarly, the consumer also ought to know the response types, response attributes, etc. That's why one of the most important qualities I value in an API is their documentation. An undocumented API is quite simply unusable.

comment Handling requests RESTfully?
Exactly. The explicitness makes things much easier to deal with, since there's such clear separation and isolation of the role of every callback. Of course the fact that REST imposes this inherent design princisples, doesn't stop anyone from having a terrible implementation. However I just think that it's a tad more difficult to mess up than other more fuzzy architectures :)

comment Is there an encyclopedia of algorithms?
That's the closest to an algorithm encyclopedia that I can think of. Excellent book!
