comment Should every class I write adhere to an interface?
One more reason for interfaces is if your testing system makes it necessary, which may depend on your language and test-framework. Hopefully you don't need to do this, of course.

comment How and where should I put a version number in my Django project?
This sounds like a better question for StackOverflow, since it involves a specific technology-stack. That said, you can probably give every app/library/module its own version if you want, and the version that matters for deployment is the "root" project, the one that binds all the rest together.

comment Logging Database Changes
OK, so it sounds like you're developing a feature to track pending/approved/denied change-requests against some kind of business-object, rather than a pervasive logging infrastructure for all kinds of changes. Does that sound right?

comment Logging Database Changes
P.S.: Actually, are you trying to log operational changes (like for a customer's name or blog-post edit) or are you trying to log development changes (like with configuration data soft-coded into a table)? I just realized that your first example--of a code-change--implies that you're trying to track why table-data was changed during development.

The first question to ask is how how you plan to use the auditing and how much of it you need. There's a huge difference between replay/undo functionality versus "I need to know who to blame for legal reasons" functionality.

comment Validating transaction codes with reference codes… Best way to encode the validation rules?
Questions: (A) Do you mean that transaction-codes (and associated patterns) must be add-able at runtime? (B) Can someone change an existing pattern? (C) So, what happens to data already-entered that might no longer match? (D) How complex can these patterns be? Is it possible for someone to want constraints you cannot satisfy with a regex?
