maybe I am missing something in your demonstration, but I would have said that the binary representation of 17 is 10001 rather than 1001

You gave me anyway some interesting points for the future, as I am missing some vocabulary and background on the subject (I am implementing my evaluator nearly from scratch and upon a rather poorly storage featured language that is Powerbuilder). I have found en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evaluation_strategy that seems to summarize pretty well the evaluation options. Thanks :)

While your suggestion about "call by name" semantics shown me some interesting points, it is a bit overkill for my evaluator that is not a complete compiler, as my function calls are single-line (think about MS-excel formulas). I am thinking I could add a step after the queuing of tokens by doing a pseudo-evaluation of the stack to deduce the calling tree. It should be easier to know from the tree the branches to discard.

@ALJIMohamed: yes, I was also thinking about defining several interfaces for triggering specific events to refresh seperately the different visual components.

So the regular way is for the Observer to use instanceof to check what is the given object that changed? Or to use a String that could tell the kind of notification?
