I've been programming (professionally) for 6-7 years, most of that time creating pretty "enterprisey" solutions at a Finnish software product company. Right now, though, I am taking a wee break from regular employment to travel and stuff.
I mostly know and use Java (EE) and standard web technologies - plus heaps of tools and libraries from the open-source ecosystem surrounding Java. My favourite environment for Java development is IntelliJ IDEA on Linux (Ubuntu).
I'm learning more Python too, trying to make it stick in my head so I can use it effectively. Like many (it seems), I also harbour a small desire to try out iPhone development, but I'm a bit reserved about the need to learn Objective-C :-)

What would you say to a bunch of software engineering students on their first day at college? @Frustrated: Ability to code doesn't, in fact, reduce your chances of getting laid. Coding alone all the time probably does. Just remember to go out (drinking) too every once in a while. :) |

I don't program in my spare time. Does that make me a bad developer? +1. Yes, it really depends on the work environment. In a place with smart (preferably smarter than oneself) people who, as a team, care about what they do and constantly strive to improve everything (the end product, underlying code, tools, workplace conditions, etc.) you have a good chance of becoming a great developer, even if you prefer spending your free time somewhere else than in front of a computer. |

What are the most popular IDEs per language? Walter's right: Eclipse is probably the most popular. IntelliJ IDEA is the best one though. :-) |

What's your favourite quote about programming? It's unknown who originally put forth this piece of wisdom; I took it from here. |
