I'm a professional PHP programmer with almost a decade of professional experience and considerably more as a hobbyist programmer. I've also had some exposure to Java, Object Pascal and am interested in learning objective C

I've started work on a PHP framework, though it's still at a very early stage and not yet really useful. The current source is available on GitHub.

I've also begun development of a CSS3 elastic grid for use on my own projects and had published that on GitHub as well.

If a site isn't usable without javascript then it can't be effectively crawled by Google, and it may or may not be usable in a RESTful context. Even Facebook is at least minimally usable without javascript

comment Is it acceptable for projects to go over budget?
@HLGEM That's why you use "Scotty" estimates. Like Scotty from Star Trek, you always overestimate how long something is going to take/how much it's going to cost so there's room for the client to try and talk the time/money budget down. If you tell them what you think it will actually take and they demand less, you're stuck.

comment Software developer interview questions: is speed everything?
I'm glad you made a distinction between "knowledge" tests (What's a stack? What does UML stand for? etc) and "ability" tests (Design this. Implement that). The more you rush that kind of work, the worse its quality will be.

People who stick -ize on the end of words to turn them into verbs annoy the hell out of me. There's no such word as Incentivize. Totally off topic, I know, but ending this kind of nonsense is a personal crusade of mine.

Why is "carving out a niche for yourself" a bad thing? Do you want the best neurosurgeon you can get to take out your brain tumour and the best cardiologist you can find to fix your enlarged aorta, or do you want the same guy who's okay in both fields but not excellent in either to do both things for you?

comment I want to create an open data format… but I don't really know what that is
In this case Atwood's argument is basically what I just said, it's a tool that can be used or abused. It looks like you misunderstood the article's intent and just used it as an argument to not use XML at all. And in answer to your question, I found your reply hard to read because it's just one long paragraph. You might want to break it down into paragraphs. And if you're not against XML you might not want to put a blanket "don't use XML" remark at the top and then say that actually it's OK near the bottom, put those two statements closer together.

Mr. Atwood isn't the God Of Programming. Not everything he says is correct. XML is a tool like any other, it can be used well or abused. Use it if it's appropriate.

If you can find a single simple answer to that question then congratulations, you've got it made. You could retire by the time you're 40 and they'll probably even name a computer science award after you. ;)

I was just about to edit the answer to add (or at least would be extremely foolish to do so).

comment As a programmer, are you required to do timesheets?
@HLGEM We're an internal department, we don't have clients. We also don't have a lot of layers of management, it's a small business. They just don't trust us.

I think (speaking for myself at least), being made to do a timesheet demonstrates that the person requesting the timesheet doesn't trust you. I've worked in web development for years. Recently I've been asked by my current employer to start logging timesheets. Whilst it's far from the only thing about my current job I don't like, it's one more item I've added to the list of things that are making me look for a new job.
