Why do game developers prefer Windows?
I'm afraid this is not the case. Computers with i915/i945 (GMA 900/950) chipsets are (still) being sold and are not deprecated. Even on modern distributions from a few months ago (Ubuntu 11.04/Fedora 15) glxinfo will return an OpenGL version no higher than 1.4 (Mesa 7.11-devel). Such Intel hardware simply can't do later versions without software help so until softpipe is available by default, Linux on such cards will never do a higher version OpenGL. Targeting OpenGL 2.0 (or higher) will stop a program running on a wide range of Linux desktop systems...
