comment Is it bad practice for services to share a database in SOA?
I think the services must be coupled

comment What are requirements for a successful SOA?
@NimChimpsky - I thought the same thing. If the requirements for the desktop client and the web client are different, wouldn't it make sense to have 2 services? They could share the same data, and even share common code.

comment Why did an interviewer ask me a question about people eating curry?
It's not ridiculous. It shows how you approach a problem that you do not know the answer to. Solving problems without having any idea about the solution is part of being a programmer.

comment What recommendations can you give in managing a team of remote software engineers?
If they don't do what they say they will do, then replace them. Expect to pay good wages for good people. They are hard to find.

Use a checklist to make sure everyone knows exactly what needs to be done, and when. Use do.com or similar site.

How are you communicating with them? Through email? That's not good. You should talk to them regularly on the (Skype) phone as well. By voice, not chat.

comment Applicability of the Joel Test to web development companies
I don't know if the company's website is representative of the work they do for clients. In most of the places I have worked at, the company website was neglected for long periods of time. It was the lowest priority project.

comment Single Responsibility Principle - How Can I Avoid Code Fragmentation?
+1 SOLID is a means to an end, not an end in itself.

Many programming issues are not simple enough to say there is only way of doing things. Usually there is some kind of trade off involved.
