comment What are the best FizzBuzz questions for interviewing a candidate for a Software Developer role?
@Jon, I could probably trip myself up with a simple problem. Kind of like being able to do complex Calculus in one's head and yet messing up simple addition. A balanced approach is more likely to net you a better candidate, imo.

+1, for valid points. That being said, you can do a lot to optimize Rails applications. Rack lends its self to being a rather extensible system that allows for a lot of flexibility in how everything gets called. Not to mention, Ruby 1.9 is faster, JRuby is faster. I personally am a big fan of JRuby, being able to mix in the power of the JVM is a wonderful win (just be careful of gems which use exceptions for flow control -> huge overhead)

comment What would be a good 4-hour development task for a job interview?
Something we do at work is we bring someone in for a day (a full day) and talk to them a bit, do some coding with them (on our actual codebase, we prepare a small task we need done that will actually be used) and just try to integrate them as much as possible. If they're willing, we'll do it for multiple days. Last time I sat down and helped our interviewee work through some language-specific issues he ran into and everyone ended up having a good time. Took him out to lunch, and more showed him what we offered. After that he was willing to learn and that's really what makes a good candidate.
