comment Is the development of CLI apps considered “backward”?
-1 on "the development of CLI programs for users to work with directly is considered backward, and with good reason" this totally depends on the application. Many times as a user I need to work with a program to run on a machine which doesn't even have a GUI or a monitor. I sure as hell need a CLI then!

@9000 I was about to comment exactly the same thing ... Keep try: blocks to 1 or 2 lines please, never try: # Do lots of stuff.

comment Is it a must for every programmer to learn regular expressions?
Oh no! The killer must have followed her on vacation! But to find them, we'd have to search through 200 MB of emails looking for something formatted like an address! It's hopeless!

I am assuming of course your compiler/runtime error message would use a consistent line numbering method as your text editors and other text manipulation tools, which makes the readability point moot.
