IT Graduate Associate at Citigroup in Belfast, Northern Ireland

I previously graduated with a 1st class honours degree in Computer Science at Queen's University Belfast, Northern Ireland. I also obtained the Certificate in American Business Practice and a Degree Plus award.

I have also completed a 1 year internship at Kofax (formerly Singularity Ltd.) and a 3 month internship at 8over8 in Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland.

In addition, I was selected to represent Northern Ireland for the prestigious Study USA programme, in which I studied 'Business Administration & Management' at a US college for 1 year. I exceeded all requirements of the scholarship, and graduated with a GPA of 3.4.

I have a wide variety of development experiences covering a large range of technologies, such as C# .NET, Java, HTML/CSS/JavaScript, ASP.NET, PHP, SQL, Shell scripting and so on. I also have deep experience developing automated testing solutions.

comment Starting career in development, many questions about middle tier
If your developer environment is set up correctly, you should be able to debug through the application. Perhaps the production code is hosted on a Unix box, but I don't see why you wouldn't be able to run the application from your own developer environment. Have you tried asking your colleagues for some help on where to start with learning the application and configuring it to run locally? Is it a web application? (e.g. Spring MVC?)

comment How to deal with the notion of time in UI/Integration tests
Indeed. One technique for doing this is to use Dependency Injection, a technique that is useful across programming in general, not just in testing.

comment How long to spend estimating programming tasks?
The idea is that if we know that a 1 point task will take 7.5 hours, for example, then we can say that a 5 point user story will take 30 hours, and that a 10 point user story will take 60 hours. For example, we might choose one of the smallest tasks, and the estimated time can be assigned as the value of a single user story point. Then, we can use this user story as a basis for estimating larger tasks. If we think another task will take twice as long, we would assign 2 user story points (15 hours), and so on.
