comment How important is it to clean up someone else's code when faced with a tight deadline?
I agree with this answer. Also, what you consider "correct" code may be considered "ugly" by the next reader. If you don't have coding standards in place then each person will apply his/her personal standard.

@gbjbaanb well if the standard is public, like CSS is for example, then it'd be up to the editors/IDEs to use it.

In my case, my problem is that I like to see as much code in the screen as possible, so I prefer not having opening brackets in a line of their own, and I use empty lines sparingly, while I know many other people almost seem to like code 'double spaced'. Things like these are what an "auto-formatting file standard" would solve.

that's the thing, just like applying CSS doesn't change the HTML, I think a standard could be defined where formatting is separate from code. When you save/check-in the file, the code would be saved stripping extra lines and what not. If the same 'stripping' algorithm is always used, then only when the actual code changes is where differences would show.

comment What do you use macros in your editor for?
well, none of the answers really gave me a big 'are you stupid? macros are for this' reason so guess it's not that big of a feature after all (in my case), specially considering almost all the examples could have been done by search/replace, but I see how maybe one day I could find it useful for something that's repetitive and hard to do with just search/replace, even though I don't see it right now.

yes but up to a point. In college we used to joke about some C constructs, like x+++++y

I see how it could be useful for data manipulation, but I was more thinking of programming-wise, and more general use I guess. It's just that when I see editors being evaluated/compared, macro capabilities are always high in the list of needs, but I just don't see the big issue if you're writing code and thought I might be missing something
