The team are doing work that's already been estimated. They didn't complete the story during the previous sprint(s) so the effort is being carried over in the form of bugs. If you do include bugs with story points you mask the underlying productivity of the team in terms of delivered, bug free, features which is my preferred metric. As I said above, you can go on delivering 20 story points per sprint but if half of those story points are really bug fixes, the business is not getting 20 story points worth of added value.

I'm loathe to pin it purely on Oracle. It could have been a dodgy network or, more likely, a problem in the BDE and the way it interfaced with Oracle - which is always going to be a potential issue with lowest common denominator frameworks... As I said, when we changed the interface library the problem went. DOA (Direct Oracle Access) for the win BTW.
