comment Should I use try catch in my test methods?
@Jwenting Read the second paragraph - Unit testing frameworks catch the exceptions and allow tests to pass if certain exceptions are raised and fail if they are not

comment Opposite term of indent
+1 - That's a better approach than two function calls to increment & decrement the indent level.

comment Automatic programming: write code that writes code
@Jose That's the idea. Use scripting languages to automate repetitive stuff. It can be for a one-off where you get an 8x productivity boost or as in your case something time consuming that you will do again & again.

comment What is the most egregious waste of money you have seen, and what did you do about it?
@quickly_now - Which VCS was that? I've used a lot over the years & haven't found anything free or paid that I'd use in preference to Hg

comment How can my multinational transition from one development platform to another?
Write the PHP applications in a more layered "Service Oriented" way. Use an enterprise service bus to buffer the interface between PHP & Microsoft land. The key thing is do the COCOMO estimation, that should scare the living rewrites out of your manager.

I read the topic & had the same question. I doubt very much whether the project could ever be cost justifiable. Can you tell us the name of the company so we can short-sell it? ;)

comment Have any of you tried “Basic for Android”?
I thought the latest version of Rad Studio XE was promising Android support OK, you have to use PHP & it's not native but it might be a better option for a Delphi user as the IDE would be exactly what you're used to.

If you want to see trivial use Mercurial. Subversion is pretty famous for ugly merging as detailed by Joel Spolsky in his introduction to Mercurial. Theoretically SVN should be able to do this but when you have 3 developers working on 6 features that happen to hit the same bit of code in subtle ways you will not be calling it trivial, trust me. I've done that sort of merge in PVCS & it wasn't a pretty sight.
