comment What is the ideal length of a method?
In Code Complete 2, Steve McConnell references 6 different studies and rewrites that quote. The new quote agrees more with Kent Beck and Robert Martin. He says, "A large percentage of routines in object-oriented programs will be accessor routines, which will be very short. From time to time, a complex algorithm will lead to a longer routine, and in those circumstances, the routine should be allowed to grow organically up to 100-200 lines. (A line is a noncomment, nonblank line of source code.)"

comment How do I explain to non-programers what .NET is?
yea, i'd do that, then I'd hand them books from the head first series. (great beginner books that are easy to learn from and have lots of best practices boiled in.) You could start them on the "Head First Programming" book. Also the 1st 3 chapters of the C# book are free, so you can check out the teaching style: headfirstlabs.com/books/hfcsharp

comment How important is graceful degradation of JavaScript?
I can't upvote this enough. your site doesn't need to look pretty with javascript off, but if it's not navigable your search engine rankings will suffer to some unknown degree.
