I work as an environmental engineer making tools for clients to track their environmental compliance. I develop mostly in Access, Excel, VBA, SQL, C# (usually for my own fun) and some other niche domain programs.

I ride my bike to work as much as possible and have been bike commuting for several years now. The weather is always great, even when it's raining.

comment C# Minimal SQL Database
If you already have a database server up and running making another database on there is pretty trivial. If you are only using the data maybe you could consider Access.

Why does a string need to be garbage collected while a integer does not?

comment Database Design - Optimise Relationships
@James How huge is 'huge'? Based on your example you might only need a few columns: Date1, Date2, String1, String2, Int1, Int2. In your documentation you can describe that for Type1 Date1 => CloseDate and or Type2 String1 => SiteName. etc. That way you don't need to leave an empty string field because the names are different between types.

@JimmyHoffa if someone has no internet access ever they are effectively not using the same program as everyone else.

comment How can one measure contributions to a project?
@Dunk typically during performance review periods you'll be given the opportunity to ask who you want to give you a review but your managers will have the same option. They know what you've done through out the year and know under what other managers you've worked. It usually all ends up leveling out; you try to ensure your seen well and your managers try to ensure your seen honestly. If you're a good employee you'll get lots of people to say so and your manager will have the same results. If you're a bad employee few will speak up for you and your manager will get bad feedback.
